About Alice C Wainwright Park in Miami
Alice Wainwright Park is a 28-acre waterfront park and nature preserve located in northern Coconut Grove, Miami, Florida, on the southern border of Brickell. The park is named after Alice C. Wainwright, who was the first woman elected to serve on the City of Miami Commission.
The park offers stunning views of Biscayne Bay and features a diverse landscape of palm trees, gumbo limbo trees, and other native vegetation. It is home to a fragment of the once widespread tropical hardwood hammock known as Brickell Hammock, making it an important ecological site in the area.
Alice Wainwright Park provides several acres of green space for visitors to enjoy, along with recreational facilities. The park's entrance is situated on a secluded extension of Brickell Avenue, disconnected from the main portion that was formerly part of U.S. Route 1. Street parking is available, and the road is popular among cyclists.
One of the park's unique features is the exposed limestone outcrop of the Miami Rock Ridge, which can be viewed from the lower elevation area. The park also includes a wilderness area to the northeast, which contains one of the remnants of Brickell Hammock, though public access to this area is restricted.
Alice Wainwright Park serves as both a recreational space for locals and visitors and a protected natural area, offering a glimpse into South Florida's native ecosystems within an urban setting.
