About Dorsey Park in Miami
Dorsey Park is a historic public park located in the Overtown neighborhood of Miami, Florida. The park is named after Dana Albert Dorsey, who was one of the first African-American millionaires in Florida and the American South. Dorsey migrated to Miami in 1896 and worked as a carpenter for the Florida East Coast Railroad. He later became a successful businessman and philanthropist.
In 1917, during the period of segregation, Dorsey sold a large parcel of land to the City of Miami to be used as a park for Black residents. This land became what is now known as Dorsey Park. The park played an important role in the community, serving as a gathering place and recreational area for residents of Overtown.
Today, Dorsey Park features colorful murals that adorn its walls, commemorating the history of Negro League Baseball in South Florida. The park has been renovated and now includes various athletic facilities and recreational amenities. It continues to serve as an important community space in the Overtown neighborhood, preserving the legacy of Dana Albert Dorsey and the area's rich cultural history.
