About The Women's Park in Miami
The Women's Park, located in Miami, Florida, is a 15-acre lakeside park dedicated to honoring the diverse contributions of women to Miami-Dade County. Established as one of the first parks in the United States specifically dedicated to women, it serves as a recognition of their impact on improving the quality of life in the local community.
The park features a walking path that meanders through the grounds, offering visitors a pleasant outdoor experience. At its heart lies the Roxcy O'Neal Bolton Women's History Gallery, which houses displays on prominent women in history. This gallery is named after Roxcy Bolton, an early leader of the women's movement in Florida and nationwide.
Art plays a significant role in The Women's Park. The Gates and Fences Project, created by Miami artist Lydia Rubio in partnership with Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs' Arts and Public Places program, is a notable installation. This artwork symbolizes female power and exemplifies the strength of women and their contributions to the community.
In December 1992, as part of the park's official dedication ceremony, a time capsule was buried on the grounds. It contained hundreds of items celebrating the work and accomplishments of Miami-Dade County women, including writings from notable figures such as environmental activist Marjory Stoneman Douglas, African American author Zora Neale Hurston, and Cuban anthropologist Lydia Cabrera. The time capsule was unveiled on March 22, 2023, in celebration of Women's History Month.
The Women's Park hosts regular educational classes, workshops, and camps for women of all ages, further emphasizing its role as a center for women's empowerment and education.
