About Lake Jackson Mounds Archaeological State Park in Tallahassee
Lake Jackson Mounds Archaeological State Park is located just north of Tallahassee, Florida. The park preserves and interprets Native American earthwork mounds that were built between 1050 and 1500 CE. The site contains six earthen temple mounds, with two large mounds available for public viewing.
The park offers visitors a glimpse into the lives of the Native Americans who inhabited this area centuries ago. The largest mound rises over 36 feet high. Visitors can climb stairs to the top of one of the mounds for an elevated view of the surrounding landscape. Interpretive signs provide information about the mounds and the Fort Walton culture that built them.
In addition to the archaeological features, the park contains nature trails that wind through a hardwood forest. A 0.75-mile interpretive trail passes by the remnants of an early 1800s grist mill. There is also a 2.2-mile nature trail that traverses grasslands and wooded areas, offering opportunities for wildlife viewing and birdwatching.
For those seeking a peaceful retreat, the park offers clean restrooms, picnic tables, and larger pavilions for family gatherings. The well-maintained grounds provide a serene natural setting for learning about Florida's Native American heritage or simply enjoying the outdoors.
