A.J. Henry Park

AJ Henry Park is a 72-acre public park located in the Northeast quadrant of Tallahassee, Florida. The park is situated amidst seven surrounding neighborhoods in the Killearn area, offering a natural retreat within an urban setting.

The City of Tallahassee acquired the parkland in March 1985 and developed it as both an active and passive recreational space. The park was named after Dr. Joe Henry, the previous owner of the property. Development of the park began in 1986 with funding assistance from the Florida Recreation Development Assistance Program.

AJ Henry Park features a diverse landscape, including hardwood forest-covered slopes that descend to a lake. The park's topography and varied habitats make it an attractive location for local wildlife, particularly birds. Visitors may spot raptors like Mississippi Kites and Broad-winged Hawks during late spring and summer, while the lake attracts various waterfowl species in winter.

The park offers a network of trails for hiking and nature observation. There is a 2.1-mile trail system, which includes two loops of 1.2 miles and 0.9 miles, suitable for beginner-level trail users. The trails are unpaved but generally smooth and level. A small section of boardwalk provides views of the park's lake and its wildlife.

For recreational activities, AJ Henry Park provides several amenities. There are picnic areas with shelters, a large pavilion, and an open field for various sports and activities. The park also includes a playground for children and a half-court basketball area.

Nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers find the area around the lake and the lower (north) parking area particularly productive for wildlife observation. The park's trails become especially interesting during spring and fall migrations, attracting various bird species.
