About Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park in Tampa
Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park is a 25-acre public green space located along the west bank of the Hillsborough River in Tampa, Florida. The park was originally created in 1977 but underwent a major $35 million renovation that was completed in 2018.
The park is situated just north of the University of Tampa campus and across the river from downtown Tampa, offering scenic views of the city skyline. It was designed to provide recreational amenities and river access for the local community while also serving as an event space for larger gatherings.
A key feature of the park is the Tampa River Center, a 2,880 square foot event venue with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the river. Below the River Center is a 13,320 square foot boathouse that provides storage for rowing and dragon boat teams as well as kayak and paddleboard rentals for public use.
For families, the park includes a fenced children's play area with equipment suitable for ages 2-12, as well as a splash pad water feature. Shaded structures and seating areas are available throughout the playground. The park also features several athletic facilities including tennis courts, pickleball courts, basketball courts, and a multi-purpose sports field.
Other amenities include picnic pavilions, walking paths, a dog park with separate areas for large and small breeds, and a festival lawn that can accommodate up to 10,000 people for concerts and events. Public art installations are incorporated throughout the park, including sculptures and murals.
The renovation of Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park was part of a larger effort to revitalize Tampa's waterfront and provide more green space and recreational opportunities for residents. Its location along the river makes it a key component of the city's riverwalk system.
