About Memorial Park in Athens
Memorial Park is a 72-acre public park located in Athens, Georgia. Situated in the Five Points neighborhood, it is one of the most popular family destinations in the area. The park features a mix of developed recreational areas and undeveloped wooded land, providing visitors with a variety of activities and natural spaces to enjoy.
At the heart of Memorial Park is Bear Hollow Zoo, a wildlife trail that houses native Georgia animals that are non-releasable to the wild. The zoo is home to several species including black bears, bobcats, white-tailed deer, and various birds of prey. This facility offers visitors an opportunity to learn about local wildlife and conservation efforts.
The park also boasts the Birchmore Trail, a 1.25-mile walking path that winds through an urban forest. A notable feature of this trail is the "Great Wall of Happy Hollow," a granite boulder wall built single-handedly by local legend Fred Birchmore when he was in his 70s.
Water features in the park include a small lake with a paved walking path around its perimeter, offering visitors a scenic route for exercise or leisurely strolls. The lake also serves as a fishing spot for park-goers.
Memorial Park is home to Athens Creative Theatre, providing a venue for local theatrical productions and community events. Additionally, the park offers various recreational facilities for visitors of all ages, including playgrounds, picnic areas, and sports courts.
The park's diverse landscape and amenities make it a versatile space for both active recreation and passive enjoyment of nature, serving as a significant green space within the Athens community.
