About Howell Park in Atlanta
John Howell Memorial Park is a 2.8-acre green space located in the Virginia-Highland neighborhood of Atlanta, Georgia. The park spans several blocks along Virginia Avenue and Barnett Street, serving as a popular recreational area for local residents and visitors.
The park was established on the site of 11 houses that were demolished in the 1980s to make way for a proposed highway project. When the highway plans were abandoned, the land was repurposed as a public park. It is named after John Howell, a local community activist who was known for his support of human rights, civil liberties, neighborhood preservation, and the arts.
John Howell Memorial Park features a mix of open grassy areas and recreational facilities. The park's layout includes a large central lawn area, which is often used for community events, picnics, and casual sports activities. The park also incorporates sand volleyball courts and a children's playground, catering to various age groups and interests.
One notable feature of the park is a wrought iron sculpture of a phoenix, symbolizing Atlanta's resilience and rebirth. This artwork adds a cultural and historical element to the park's landscape.
The park serves as a venue for local events, including the annual Virginia-Highland Summerfest, which typically takes place in early June. During this festival, the park becomes a hub of activity, hosting live music, art displays, and community gatherings.
