Cleopas R. Johnson Park

Cleopas R. Johnson Park is a 4.4-acre urban park located near downtown Atlanta, Georgia. The park underwent significant renovations in 2011, transforming it from an underutilized space with outdated concrete playground equipment into a modern community gathering place.

The park features a unique playground that includes several distinctive elements. One of the most notable is a 17-foot tall hexagonal cable climber, which provides a challenging and engaging play structure for older children. Additionally, the playground houses a NEO 360 Play System, an interactive outdoor electronic game that offers various play modes for children to enjoy.

The color scheme of the playground equipment is designed to represent the school colors of four local colleges in the area: Morehouse, Spelman, Clark Atlanta, and Morris Brown. This connection to the surrounding educational institutions adds a sense of community identity to the park.

Beyond the playground, Cleopas R. Johnson Park offers several other recreational facilities. The park includes tennis courts, a basketball court, and concrete walking trails that encircle the area. These paths are suitable for various activities such as walking, jogging, and roller skating. The park also features open green spaces for relaxation and informal play.

To commemorate its namesake, the park includes a large art sculpture honoring Cleopas R. Johnson, who was a band director at Morris College. This installation adds a cultural and historical element to the park's landscape.
