About Augusta Commons in Augusta
Augusta Common is a centrally located park in downtown Augusta, Georgia. Situated between Broad Street and Reynolds Street, spanning the 8th and 9th Street block, this green space serves as a focal point for community gatherings and events.
The park, which opened in 2002, was developed as part of Augusta's urban revitalization efforts. It replaced a row of dilapidated buildings, transforming the area into a welcoming public space. The Common covers approximately one acre, offering an open lawn area that provides a refreshing contrast to the surrounding urban environment.
A notable feature of Augusta Common is the life-size sculpture of General James Oglethorpe, the founder of Augusta. The statue, donated by Augusta Tomorrow, Inc., depicts Oglethorpe in civilian attire at the age of 36, commemorating the year he established Augusta in 1736.
Throughout the year, Augusta Common hosts a variety of events and activities. It serves as a venue for festivals, concerts, and community gatherings. Some of the recurring events include the Arts in the Heart of Augusta Festival, Oktoberfest, Latino Festival, and the Border Bash. During the holiday season, the park becomes the site for the city's tree lighting ceremony and a Victorian Carriage Parade.
The park's central location makes it an ideal connecting point between the Riverwalk and the central business district, enhancing pedestrian flow in the downtown area. Its design includes wide sidewalks bordering the lawn, providing ample space for visitors to stroll or relax.
