About Franklin Square in Savannah

Franklin Square is a historic public square located in Savannah, Georgia. Established in 1790, it is one of the 22 squares that make up Savannah's distinctive city plan. The square is situated at the intersection of Montgomery Street and West St. Julian Street, in the northwestern corner of the city's historic district.

Named after Benjamin Franklin, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, the square has a rich history. Franklin served as an agent for the colony of Georgia in London from 1768 to 1775. In the mid to late 19th century, Franklin Square was home to the city's water tower, earning it nicknames such as "Water Tower Square," "Water Tank Square," and "Reservoir Square."

The square underwent significant changes over time. In 1935, it was partially destroyed to accommodate the routing of U.S. Highway 17 along Montgomery Street. However, in the mid-1980s, efforts were made to restore the square, coinciding with the commemoration of Georgia's 250th founding anniversary.

Today, Franklin Square is notable for its central monument, the Haitian Monument. Created by sculptor James Mastin, this monument pays tribute to the Haitian soldiers who fought for American Independence during the Siege of Savannah in 1779. The sculpture depicts the "Chasseurs-Volontaires de Saint-Domingue," or Freedom Fighters, including a representation of Henri Christophe, who at age 12 served as a drummer boy and later became the commander of the Haitian army and King of Haiti.

The square is surrounded by historically significant buildings. On its western side stands the First African Baptist Church, recognized as the oldest Black Christian congregation in North America. Organized in 1788, this church predates the establishment of the first white Baptist church in Savannah by 12 years.

Franklin Square is located at the western end of City Market, a popular area known for its shops, antiques, and dining experiences. Despite its central location, the square maintains a somewhat understated atmosphere, offering visitors a glimpse into Savannah's rich history and cultural heritage.
