Elbert Square

Elbert Square was originally laid out in 1801 and named for Samuel Elbert, a Revolutionary War soldier, sheriff of Chatham County, and Governor of Georgia. It was located on Montgomery Street between Hull and Perry streets in Savannah, Georgia.

Unfortunately, Elbert Square has been largely lost to urban development over the years. In the 1930s, much of the square was paved over to make way for improvements to Montgomery Street. Today, only a small portion of the original square remains.

What is left of Elbert Square is now represented by a narrow strip of greenery across Montgomery Street from the west entrance of the Savannah Civic Center. This small grassy area serves as a minor landmark and a reminder of the square's historical presence in the city's layout.

The square no longer functions as a traditional park or gathering space due to its reduced size. Its primary purpose now is to provide a small green space in an otherwise urban environment.
