About Daffin Park in Savannah
Daffin Park is a historic 80-acre public park located in Savannah, Georgia. Established in 1907, the park was designed by renowned landscape architect John Nolen and named after Philip Daffin, the first chairman of the Savannah Park and Tree Commission.
The park features a Beaux Arts-inspired layout with a central oak-lined mall, radial elements emanating from two prominent circles, and a large-scale water feature. Its design reflects the principles of the City Beautiful Movement popular in early 20th century urban planning.
Daffin Park serves as a major recreational space for Savannah residents and visitors. It includes extensive walking paths, including a 1.5-mile rubberized trail around the park's perimeter named after Robert Espinoza. The park also contains multiple sports facilities, open green spaces for various activities, and a picturesque pond that adds to its aesthetic appeal.
A notable feature of Daffin Park is Grayson Stadium, built in 1941 to replace an earlier Municipal Stadium. The stadium is home to the Savannah Bananas baseball team and contributes to the park's role as a center for local sports and community events.
Throughout its history, Daffin Park has evolved to meet changing community needs while maintaining its original character. Today, it continues to be a popular destination for exercise, relaxation, and community gatherings, offering a diverse range of recreational opportunities in a beautifully landscaped setting.
