About Winnemac Park in Chicago
Winnemac Park in Chicago, Illinois, spans 22.38 acres and is part of the school-park campus program. The park integrates land owned by both Chicago Public Schools and the Chicago Park District, making it a shared space for recreation and education. It is bounded by Damen, Foster, Leavitt, and Argyle Streets and lies adjacent to Amundsen High School and Chappell Elementary School.
Established by the City of Chicago's Special Parks Commission in 1910, the park underwent significant renovations in 1999 with $2 million improvements, including enhanced landscaping, the addition of 200 trees, and the creation of a scenic prairie garden with a nature trail. Its natural area contains three acres of native prairie habitat, featuring tall grasses and flowering plants like black-eyed susans and asters, which attract butterflies and birds.
The park offers a variety of amenities including multiple sports fields, playgrounds, and walking paths. It is a hub for recreational activities, hosting youth programs, sports leagues, and summer camps. Recent upgrades in 2024 introduced a renovated baseball diamond, refurbished tennis courts, and new pickleball facilities, along with improved lighting and ADA-accessible pathways. These improvements further enhance its usability for both the school community and local residents.
In addition to its recreational facilities, Winnemac Park provides opportunities for quiet relaxation and nature immersion. Its prairie area has woodchip trails for walking and is maintained through community volunteer efforts. Visitors also enjoy picnicking and participating in seasonal events, making it a versatile and valued green space on Chicago's north side.
