About Mayfair Park in Chicago
Mayfair Park is a 3-acre public park located in the Mayfair neighborhood on Chicago's northwest side. The park is tucked away one block north of the intersection of Kilbourn Avenue and Montrose Avenue, near the Kennedy Expressway.
The park features a soft-surface playground area with modern equipment installed in 2007. This playground includes two large play structures - one accessible via ramp with various slides and climbing elements, and a smaller structure designed for younger children. The playground surface is made of poured-in-place rubber for safety. A water spray feature with four sprayers arranged in a circle and a "halo sprayer" provides a place for children to cool off in warm weather.
In addition to the playground, Mayfair Park contains two junior baseball fields and a basketball court. The park's fieldhouse includes a clubroom, dedicated preschool room, kitchen, and auditorium with a stage. Mature trees throughout the park provide shade.
Mayfair Park offers a variety of programming for different age groups. Early childhood programs include classes like Kiddie College and Parent & Tot Gymnastics. For youth, the park provides activities such as archery, soccer, gymnastics and dodgeball. Cultural programs like arts & crafts are also available. Fitness classes for adults and seniors are offered as well.
The park was established in the early 20th century by the Irving Park District. Its fieldhouse was designed by architect Clarence Hatzfeld in 1931 and later renovated in 1936. Additional recreational features like horseshoe, shuffleboard, and tennis courts were added by 1947. The park's landscape was redesigned in 1970 to expand its athletic fields.
