About Simons Park in Chicago
Simons Park, officially known as Simons (Almira) Park, is a municipal park in the Humboldt Park community of Chicago's West Side. Administered by the Chicago Park District, this park spans several acres and serves as a vital recreational space for the surrounding neighborhood.
The park's history dates back to the early 20th century. Originally farmland owned by Edward and Laura Sprague Simons, the property was purchased in 1920 by the Northwest Park District to establish a public park. By 1928, a fieldhouse designed by Walter W. Ahlschlager had been constructed, completing the park's initial development. The fieldhouse underwent remodeling in 1990 and further renovations in the early 2000s.
Simons Park offers a range of facilities for various activities, catering to diverse age groups and interests. The park features both indoor and outdoor recreational spaces, making it a year-round destination for community members. Its location, midway between Kedzie and Pulaski Avenues and just one-half block north of North Avenue, makes it easily accessible to residents of the Humboldt Park area.
The park has played a significant role in the community's history and continues to be a center for recreational and cultural activities. It offers numerous programs throughout the year, including arts and crafts classes, fitness sessions, and sports activities for children, adults, and seniors.
