About Jackie Robinson Park in Chicago
Jackie Robinson Park is a 12.27-acre public park located in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. The park, originally named Mount Vernon Park, was renamed in 1999 to honor baseball legend Jackie Robinson, the first African American to play in Major League Baseball.
The park is bounded by 145th Street to the south and 155th Street to the north. It features a variety of recreational facilities and green spaces that serve the local community. The park's terrain includes both flat areas for sports fields and some sloping sections, providing a diverse landscape for visitors to enjoy.
Jackie Robinson Park is home to the Jackie Robinson Little League, which has been using the park as its base since 1971. The park has played a significant role in community sports and youth development over the years.
In recent years, the Chicago Park District has been working on plans to enhance the park's facilities. A notable addition is the proposed construction of a new 18,000-square-foot fieldhouse, which is expected to replace a long-vacant Chicago Public Schools annex building. This development, funded by a $15 million state grant, aims to provide more year-round programming options for the community.
