About Juniper Park in Chicago
Juniper Park is a small but vibrant green space located in the Lakeview neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. Covering 0.37 acres, it is a charming neighborhood park two blocks east of Ashland Avenue and half a block north of Addison Street. It is particularly well-suited for families with young children, thanks to its nature-inspired playground and thoughtful design.
The park features a newly renovated playground with a variety of interactive elements. These include a rotating net climber, a climbing wall, sensory paths, and a water table, making it an engaging environment for kids to explore and play. The surface is soft and rubberized, ensuring safety for younger visitors. A sandbox is also available, adding to its appeal for children aged 2–12. Additionally, the park provides a water spray feature, perfect for cooling off during the summer months.
Juniper Park has a rich history. The Chicago Park District acquired the land from the Waveland Avenue Congregational Church in 1972 to address the lack of parks in the area. It was named Juniper Park as part of a trend of naming parks after trees or plants. Junipers are small evergreen trees or shrubs known for their berries, which serve as a food source for birds in winter, and their wood, which is often used for its pleasant odor and moth-repelling properties.
Though this park does not offer structured programming, nearby Sheil Park hosts additional activities. Its tranquil setting, coupled with family-friendly amenities, makes it a beloved local spot for relaxation and play.
