Southwind Park, also known as Edwin Watts Southwind Park, is an 80-acre public park in Springfield, Illinois, celebrated for its innovative and inclusive design. Opened in 2010, the park sets a national example for accessibility, exceeding all ADA compliance standards to ensure a welcoming environment for visitors of all abilities. Its eco-friendly facilities include features such as a wind turbine, solar panels, geothermal systems, and wetlands, demonstrating a commitment to sustainability.
At the heart of the park lies Erin’s Pavilion, a Platinum LEED-certified building that serves as a visitor center and hosts various recreational and educational programs. The park also offers a range of nature-focused attractions such as sensory gardens, a butterfly garden, and a fragrant garden. Each garden has unique features, including raised planters for wheelchair users, tranquility areas for Alzheimer's patients, and spaces where children can learn about gardening. The entire park is traversed by 2.5 miles of paved urban trails equipped with navigation aids and emergency call stations.
Southwind Park features numerous recreational amenities, including fishing piers by a stocked lake, ADA-accessible playgrounds, a barrier-free treehouse, and outdoor musical instruments. Visitors can enjoy leisure sports with bocce ball courts, horseshoe pits, shuffleboard, and a life-size chess game. The park also includes five picnic shelters, all equipped with fans and electrical outlets, and spacious green lawns ideal for gatherings, kite flying, and other activities. Additionally, the park celebrates art and culture with the nightly light and music display at the Selvaggio Historic Arches.
