About Flowing Well Park in Carmel
Flowing Well Park is a peaceful 15-acre park located at 5100 E. 116th Street in Carmel, Indiana. This park, which opened in 1994 as Carmel Clay Park & Recreation's first public park, is known for its serene natural atmosphere and unique artesian well. It provides visitors with opportunities for outdoor activities such as hiking, creek stomping, fishing, and water gathering.
The park's centerpiece is the historic "Old Faithful" artesian well, discovered in 1904. This natural feature continues to attract visitors who come with empty containers to collect free, fresh water. While the water is tested monthly for quality by the City of Carmel’s Water Department, it is untreated groundwater, and visitors are advised to boil it before consumption.
Flowing Well Park features a one-mile soft surface nature trail winding through wooded areas and alongside Cool Creek. Interpretive signage along the trail offers educational insights into the local ecosystem. Cool Creek itself is another highlight of the park, providing opportunities for creek stomping, fishing, and nature exploration. It is a great spot to cool off in shallow waters or try your luck catching fish like creek chub, sunfish, and bass.
In the spring, the park comes alive with wildflowers, including Virginia bluebells, bloodroots, and yellow trout lilies, making it a popular destination for nature enthusiasts. Amenities like restrooms, a seasonal foot wash station, and a picnic shelter complete the visitor experience. The park provides a tranquil "national park-like" escape in the middle of Carmel, making it a beloved local destination.
The park is open daily from sunrise to sunset, welcoming all who wish to immerse themselves in its natural beauty.
