Hudnut Commons

Hudnut Commons is a small but significant green space located in downtown Indianapolis at the corner of Maryland Street and Capitol Avenue. Named in honor of four-term Indianapolis Mayor William H. Hudnut III, the park celebrates his extensive contributions to the city’s development and civic life. It is conveniently situated near major landmarks like the Indiana Convention Center and serves as a tranquil retreat within the bustling urban environment.

The park's most notable feature is a life-sized statue of Mayor Hudnut. The statue is deliberately designed to depict him seated on a bench, symbolizing his connection with and accessibility to the people of Indianapolis. Hudnut Commons also boasts well-maintained green lawns and beautifully landscaped gardens, making it a popular spot for relaxation and community gatherings. Previously, the land where Hudnut Commons now stands had been home to the *Indianapolis Times*. After the newspaper ceased publication in 1965, the site was used for parking until the Westin Hotel was constructed nearby in 1987, followed by the development of Capitol Commons and later Hudnut Commons in 2013. Today, the park is maintained by the Capital Improvement Board of Managers and continues to feature in various historical tours within downtown Indianapolis.
