About Andrew Ramsey Park in Indianapolis

Andrew Ramsey Park is a neighborhood park located in the Butler Tarkington area of Indianapolis, Indiana. Established in 1971, the park sits on approximately 2 acres of land along 42nd Street. The park's unique layout features a limited frontage along 42nd Street, with the majority of the property surrounded by private homes on three sides.

Named after Andrew W. Ramsey, a Butler University graduate and high school teacher who was active in the Civil Rights movement in Indianapolis from the 1950s onward, the park was dedicated in his honor on May 18, 1974. Ramsey, who lived nearby on Byram Avenue, was known for his work with the NAACP and as a longtime columnist for the Indianapolis Recorder.

The park underwent renovations, with a new splash pad opening in the summer of 2024. This addition, funded from Indy Parks' capital budget, has become a popular feature for local families during warm weather months. The park also includes a playground area, providing recreational opportunities for children of various ages.

Andrew Ramsey Park serves as a community gathering space, offering amenities for both active play and relaxation. Its location within a residential area makes it a convenient spot for nearby residents to enjoy outdoor activities and community events.
