About The Viginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park: 100 Acres in Indianapolis

The Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park, often referred to as the "100 Acres," is a unique blend of natural beauty and artistic expression. Located within the Newfields campus in Indianapolis, Indiana, this 100-acre park is among the largest art and nature parks in the United States, welcoming visitors daily from sunrise to sunset. Designed by landscape architect Edward L. Blake, Jr., the space opened in 2010 and is managed by the Indianapolis Museum of Art. It exemplifies a harmonious integration of art and environment, emphasizing sustainability and interaction with nature.

The park encompasses a variety of landscapes, including woodlands, wetlands, meadows, and a 35-acre lake. It is situated within a floodplain bordered by the White River and the Indiana Central Canal, offering an ever-changing natural setting. Visitors can explore miles of walking trails that weave through its diverse topography while encountering site-specific contemporary art installations. These interactive artworks, created by both national and international artists, encourage reflection, playfulness, and a connection with the environment. Notable sculptures include *Funky Bones* by Atelier Van Lieshout, Jeppe Hein's *Bench Around the Lake*, and Los Carpinteros’ *Free Basket*, a surrealist basketball court.

The Ruth Lilly Visitors Pavilion, a LEED-certified structure by architect Marlon Blackwell, is another highlight. Inspired by the form of a fallen leaf, this sustainable building offers restrooms, a multipurpose room, and a tranquil space for guests to enjoy the park. In addition, the Wild Birds Unlimited Native Pollinator Meadow showcases vibrant native plantings, supporting local biodiversity and enriching the visitor experience.

The park is accessible via the Central Canal Towpath, which connects it to Indianapolis’s extensive trail network. Facilities include parking, bike racks, and an Indiana Pacers Bikeshare station. Admission is free, making this urban oasis a welcoming space for relaxation, outdoor activities, and artistic exploration.
