About Cedar Lake Park in Cedar Rapids
Cedar Lake is a centrally located recreational area in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The lake covers approximately 115 acres and is situated near downtown Cedar Rapids. It consists of two sections: a larger north cell and a smaller south cell. The north cell is the primary area used for recreational activities.
Cedar Lake has historically served as a cooling pond for the nearby Alliant Energy power plant. In recent years, efforts have been made to revitalize the lake and transform it into a community asset. In 2019, the City of Cedar Rapids assumed ownership of the north cell of Cedar Lake from Alliant Energy, paving the way for enhanced public access and recreational opportunities.
The lake is popular among local residents for various outdoor activities. Fishing is a common pastime at Cedar Lake, with anglers able to catch species such as largemouth bass, bluegill, and channel catfish. The lake also supports non-motorized boating activities, including kayaking and canoeing.
A paved trail encircles Cedar Lake, providing opportunities for walking, jogging, and cycling. The trail connects to the larger trail system in Cedar Rapids, allowing for extended recreational routes. The lake's shoreline offers areas for picnicking and relaxation, with views of the water and surrounding landscape.
As part of ongoing revitalization efforts, there are plans to further enhance Cedar Lake's amenities and accessibility. These plans include improved park entrances, additional recreational features, and measures to protect and enhance the wetlands on the north shore of the lake.
