About Veterans Memorial Park in Cedar Rapids
Veterans Memorial Park is located at the intersection of East 14th Street and Waterloo Road in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Established in 1996, this 1-acre park is dedicated to honoring those who have served in the United States military. The park serves as a place for quiet reflection and public ceremonies commemorating veterans.
The focal point of Veterans Memorial Park is a 50-foot flagpole situated in a circular plaza. The base of the flagpole features five black granite tablets arranged in a pentagon shape, with each tablet etched with the seal of one of the five branches of the U.S. military. Surrounding the central plaza are brick walkways radiating outward, where individual bricks can be purchased and engraved with veterans' names, branch of service, and dates of service.
The park includes several other memorial features, including a miniature Statue of Liberty gifted to the city by the Boy Scouts of America in 1952. Evergreen and flowering trees are planted throughout the grounds, and five granite benches surround the central plaza, providing seating for visitors. While small in size, Veterans Memorial Park offers a meaningful space for the community to honor and remember those who have served their country.
