About Peony Park in Des Moines
Peony Park is an 8-acre public park located in West Des Moines, Iowa. Established in 1999, the park sits on land that was formerly known as Peony Farm. This farm was owned by Jay Norwood "Ding" Darling, a Pulitzer Prize-winning political cartoonist and noted conservationist.
The park offers a variety of recreational facilities for visitors. It features a picnic shelter with a grill that operates on a first-come, first-served basis. For families with children, there are two separate play equipment areas: one designed for 2-5 year olds and another for 5-12 year olds. Sports enthusiasts can enjoy the non-lighted tennis court (which is also striped for pickleball) and a non-lighted basketball court.
For those seeking a peaceful walk or jog, Peony Park includes a 0.35-mile loop trail. The park also boasts a large open playfield suitable for various activities. Restroom facilities are available from April 15 to October 15, weather permitting. Additionally, the park includes a backstop and a parking lot for visitor convenience.
Peony Park stands as a testament to its namesake, with the land's history of peony cultivation reflected in its name. It serves as a valuable community resource, providing West Des Moines residents with a space for recreation, relaxation, and connection with nature.
