About Mount Marty Park in Kansas City
Mount Marty Park is a scenic urban park located in Kansas City, Kansas. Situated atop a bluff, the park offers panoramic views of the Kansas City skyline and the surrounding valley. The park's most prominent feature is the Rosedale Memorial Arch, a World War I monument designed by architect John Leroy Marshall and constructed in 1923-24.
The park covers approximately 10.99 acres and includes a network of trails known as the Rozarks Nature Trails. These trails, spanning about 4.5 miles, wind through wooded areas and provide opportunities for hiking and exploration. The terrain is moderately challenging, featuring steep and narrow sections as well as rustic handmade bridges.
Mount Marty Park has historical significance beyond its natural beauty. The hilltop was originally known as Mount Marty in honor of Albert Marty, a real estate developer who donated the land to the city. During World War I, it served as a gathering point for Kansas National Guard troops before they departed for France.
Today, the park is maintained by the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas' parks and recreation department. Local community organizations, such as the Rosedale Development Association, often organize volunteer cleanup events and activities to enhance the park's appeal and encourage visitation.
