Thompson Park

Thompson Park, situated in the heart of Downtown Overland Park, Kansas, spans 4.8 acres and serves as a vibrant community hub. It combines historical significance with modern amenities to cater to visitors of all ages. The park underwent a significant renovation in 2019 and 2020, transforming it into a versatile public space while honoring the city’s rich heritage. Originally named Santa Fe Commons, it was renamed after Frank and Evangeline Thompson, local business owners and philanthropists who contributed generously to the community.

The park's design incorporates elements reflective of Overland Park’s aviation history and includes the historic Strang Carriage House, built by city founder William B. Strang Jr. in the early 1900s. This structure, renovated in recent years, now serves as a modern event space. Thompson Park also features a large performance stage under a unique paper airplane-shaped awning, a nod to the city’s aviation past, making it a venue for concerts and cultural events.

Families will find engaging recreational facilities such as a playground with interactive elements including swings, climbing structures, and a water play area. The park also features two open-air shelters, seating areas, and an outdoor work zone equipped with Wi-Fi and power outlets, promoting a mix of leisure and productivity. Restrooms are available year-round, ensuring convenience for all visitors.
