About South University Park in Ann Arbor
South University Park is a small urban park located on South University Avenue at Walnut Street in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Situated in a residential neighborhood just east of the downtown area, this park covers half an acre. Despite its modest size, South University Park serves as a quiet retreat for community members seeking green space in the bustling city.
The park has an interesting history, as the land it occupies was originally home to two abandoned houses. In the early 1970s, neighbors transformed the space into a local park, and through their advocacy, the City of Ann Arbor officially purchased the property. Key contributors to this transformation, Leslie and Michael Morris, played a vital role in turning the park into a public asset. Leslie Morris later served on the Ann Arbor City Council and Park Advisory Commission, continuing her dedication to city parks.
Over time, South University Park has seen improvements to its facilities. A significant renovation in 2012-2013 included the replacement of outdated benches, the removal of a dilapidated kiosk, and the repaving of the basketball court. These updates were made possible, in part, by a generous $50,000 donation from the Morris family. Today, the park maintains its status as a community-centered green space that reflects the neighborhood's commitment to enhancing public recreation areas.
South University Park offers a modest range of amenities and is best suited for casual recreational activities or quiet relaxation in the heart of the city.
