About Belknap Park in Grand Rapids
Belknap Park is a 25-acre public park located in the Belknap Lookout neighborhood of Grand Rapids, Michigan. The park sits atop Belknap Hill, a 160-foot bluff overlooking downtown Grand Rapids and offering panoramic views of the city skyline and Grand River.
Originally the site of Grand Rapids' first water reservoir built in 1874, the area was renamed Belknap Park in 1932 to honor Civil War veteran Captain Charles Belknap. Today, the park serves as a popular recreational destination for local residents and visitors.
The park features a variety of outdoor facilities, including baseball diamonds, pickleball courts, and walking trails. It is home to 21 dedicated outdoor pickleball courts with permanent lines and nets, making it a hub for pickleball enthusiasts in the area. The park also contains a lighted baseball field used for community games and events.
In addition to its sports facilities, Belknap Park offers scenic green spaces and provides access to several sledding hills, making it a popular winter destination. The park hosts annual music events like the Breakaway Music Festival and Upheaval Festival, utilizing its spacious grounds and city views as a backdrop for performances.
Belknap Park is managed by the City of Grand Rapids Parks and Recreation Department, which maintains the facilities and organizes various community programs and events throughout the year.
