About Wilcox Park in Grand Rapids
Wilcox Park, located in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is a 13.6-acre community park that offers a charming green space in the city's Eastown neighborhood. Established after the 1911 park bond, the park reflects a historic dedication to public recreation, named for F.P. Wilcox, who also contributed funds for its expansion. The park's original layout was developed by Eugene Goebel, the Grand Rapids Superintendent of Parks from 1905–1928, and it has evolved over the decades, replacing its initial bathhouse and pool with modern amenities.
The park is recognized for its versatility, catering to residents of all ages with a range of recreational facilities. Its splash pad, a circular concrete feature, is a summer favorite for families, while the spacious playground includes contemporary play structures over mulch as well as some vintage equipment, creating a nostalgic atmosphere. It is also a perfect setting for relaxing activities such as hammocking, flying kites, or enjoying a picnic. Visitors can take in the scenic beauty of the park's well-maintained greenery and open spaces, which are ideal for frisbee, soccer, and other outdoor sports.
Sports enthusiasts will find plenty to do, as the park features basketball and tennis courts (including four tennis courts), a baseball diamond, and soccer fields. For those seeking event spaces, the park provides an enclosed shelter that can be reserved, along with clean and accessible restrooms. Wilcox Park is welcoming year-round for general visitation during daylight hours, while its splash pad operates during the summer months from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM. The park's stroller-friendly paths and proximity to Aquinas College make it a popular local destination for both casual recreation and organized activities.
