Moores Park

Moores Park is a historic and versatile recreational space located in Lansing, Michigan, along the Grand River. This park, donated in 1908 by J.H. Moores, a prominent figure in Lansing's urban development, covers an area larger than a football field and has been a cherished part of the community for over a century. The park offers a combination of recreational amenities, historic landmarks, and access to nature, making it a popular destination for both residents and visitors.

One of the most iconic features of Moores Park is the J.H. Moores Memorial Natatorium, commonly known as the Moores Park Pool. Built in 1922, this above-ground, elliptical pool was a prototype for the Bintz Pool design and remains a unique architectural feature listed on the National Register of Historic Places. While the pool closed in 2019 due to structural challenges, it is undergoing significant renovations and is slated to reopen in 2025 as a modernized yet historically preserved facility.

The park is a starting point for the Lansing River Trail, a scenic paved trail extending over 20 miles, allowing visitors to bike, jog, or walk along the Grand River. Moores Park also features a variety of sports facilities, including basketball and tennis courts, as well as mixed-use fields. For families, there is a medium-sized, well-shaded playground with engineered wood fiber surfaces. Picnic areas equipped with tables and grills provide spaces for gatherings, and fishing and kayaking are popular activities along the river.

Adding to its charm, the park includes a walking labyrinth, open green spaces with partial shade, and historic entry pillars bearing J.H. Moores' inspirational motto. The park’s layout and amenities are ADA-accessible, ensuring inclusivity for all visitors. Over the years, neighborhood efforts have helped maintain and revitalize the park, preserving it as a hub for community connection and cultural heritage.
