About 3M Flat Branch-Hinkson Creek Wetlands in Columbia
The 3M Flat Branch-Hinkson Creek Wetlands in Columbia, Missouri, is an ecologically significant area designed to manage stormwater runoff from urban watersheds while simultaneously restoring natural habitats. Covering 26.2 acres, the wetlands serve to filter pollutants from stormwater runoff originating from approximately 140 acres of urban landscapes, capable of treating an estimated 10 million gallons of water. This project is the result of collaborative efforts by seventeen agency partners, spearheaded by a grant from 3M, and aimed at mitigating the environmental degradation caused by urban runoff into Hinkson Creek.
As an educational and recreational space, the wetlands are integrated with a 1.25-mile gravel loop trail that connects to the popular MKT Trail. Along this trail, visitors can learn through 24 interpretive signs that outline the significance of wetlands and the area’s restoration history. Each sign is accompanied by QR codes that provide access to audio versions of the information for an enhanced learning experience. Birding enthusiasts will find this park particularly appealing, as it has been recognized as a "hot spot" for bird sightings, adding to its appeal as a nature observation area.
The old sewer treatment pumphouse on the site has been ingeniously repurposed into a green-roofed viewing platform equipped with picnic tables, making it a unique feature of the park. This transformation symbolizes the blend of restoration and utility, offering a space where visitors can relax while observing the wetlands and their wildlife. The park is also accessible from various points, allowing seamless integration with the surrounding Columbia community.
