About Tower Park in Kansas City
Tower Park is a historically significant and scenic 19-acre park located at the intersection of 75th Street and Holmes Road in Kansas City, Missouri. Its most prominent feature is the Waldo Water Tower, also officially known as the Frank T. Riley Memorial. Constructed between 1919 and 1920, this castle-like reinforced concrete water tower stands 134 feet tall and was originally designed to provide water pressure for the surrounding area. While decommissioned in 1957, the tower has remained a central landmark, celebrated for its architectural uniqueness and historical importance. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977 and is recognized as an American Water Landmark.
The park offers a peaceful retreat for visitors, surrounded by green spaces and community-focused amenities. Visitors can enjoy scenic walking trails, a children’s playground, picnic areas, and sports fields. The walking paths provide an opportunity for leisurely strolls, while the rain garden adds a touch of natural beauty to the park's landscape. The park’s history is rooted in community action, with neighborhood efforts in the mid-20th century establishing this area as a public space instead of residential housing.
Today, Tower Park continues to serve as a recreational hub and a site of historical preservation. Its well-maintained grounds and variety of activities make it an appealing destination for families, sports enthusiasts, and history buffs.
