About Hidden Valley Park in Kansas City
Hidden Valley Park in Kansas City, Missouri, spans an impressive 195 acres, showcasing a blend of recreational facilities and natural beauty. Located near NE Russell Road and N Bennington Avenue, it is uniquely divided into two main areas: the "North Area" and the "Natural Area." The "North Area" contains mowed land with amenities such as lighted walking trails, a disc golf course, playground equipment, a reservable shelter house, picnic tables, and grills. In contrast, the "Natural Area" consists of dense oak-hickory forest, rugged terrain, and a small creek flowing through a deep ravine, making it ideal for hiking and experiencing a tranquil setting.
The park’s trail system is one of its standout features, offering a four-mile loop that winds through the forested Natural Area. The trail skirts steep valleys and includes wooden bridges for creek crossings, all under a scenic canopy of trees. This single-track path, while rated as moderately difficult, offers a sense of remoteness despite its urban surroundings. It provides opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, and running, making it a versatile space for visitors with different activity preferences.
Hidden Valley Park also holds historical significance. Established in the 1950s, it was initially used as a remote-controlled airplane airfield and locally referred to as "Airplane Park." It wasn't until 2013 that major developments transformed the area into its current form. In 1978, 82 acres of its southern side were designated a Missouri Natural Area by the State of Missouri Conservation Department, highlighting its ecological value.
This park is ideal for families, outdoor enthusiasts, and nature lovers alike, offering both recreational facilities and an immersive natural environment within a bustling city.
