About Smith Park in Springfield
Smith Park is a community park located in Springfield, Missouri. The park sits on 50 acres of land and features a variety of recreational facilities and natural areas. Established in 1935, Smith Park has served as a local gathering place for decades.
The park is situated along Jordan Creek, just north of what was once the Glenstone Golf Course. In 1941, during World War II, the nearby golf course was sold to the federal government for the construction of O'Reilly General Army Hospital. While the park board declined to sell Smith Park at that time, it was eventually condemned in 1942 and taken over by the U.S. Army to serve as a recreation area for the hospital. It wasn't until 1954 that the federal government allowed the park board to repurchase Smith Park for $20,000.
Today, Smith Park offers a mix of active and passive recreation opportunities for visitors. The Jordan Creek Greenway connects the park to nearby Silver Springs Park and extends further to Jordan Valley Park, providing additional recreational connectivity for the community. The park is conveniently located adjacent to the Boys & Girls Club of Springfield - Stalnaker Unit, making it easily accessible for youth programs and activities.
