About Poelker Park in St Louis
Poelker Park is a one-acre urban park located in downtown St. Louis, Missouri. It is one of a series of six parks along Market Street in the Downtown West neighborhood. The park is situated between Tucker Boulevard, Market Street, Chestnut Street, and 13th Street.
Established in 1986, Poelker Park is named in honor of John Poelker, who served as Mayor of St. Louis from 1974 to 1977. The park's central location makes it a convenient gathering space for city residents and visitors.
A notable feature of Poelker Park is the firefighters' memorial. Created in 1994 by sculptor R. P. Daus, the memorial consists of a bronze statue depicting a firefighter carrying a young girl. The statue rests atop a granite base inscribed with the words "Dedicated to St. Louis firefighters past, present and future." This monument serves as a tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of St. Louis firefighters.
The park is designed to function as a central corridor of green space in the urban landscape. Its location near prominent city landmarks, including City Hall to the south and the St. Louis University Law School to the east, makes it a focal point for civic activities and public gatherings.
