About Fremont Park in St Louis
Fremont Park is a city park located in the Benton Park neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri. Established in 1963, the park spans 2.31 acres and was formerly known as Pontiac Central Park before being renamed after John C. Frémont, an American explorer, military officer, and politician.
Situated towards the northern part of Benton Park, Fremont Park is bounded by Lynch Street to the north, Salena Street to the east, and the alley behind McNair Street to the west. Wisconsin Street dead-ends into the park on its southern side.
The park features a large open area. It also includes a playground area with equipment, although some parts may require maintenance due to tree root growth making certain areas potentially hazardous.
Fremont Park is characterized by several old-growth oak trees that provide ample shade, particularly separating the playground area from the eastern field. The park's tree canopy contributes to its overall aesthetic appeal.
Adjacent to the park stands the former Fremont Elementary School, built in 1896. This historic building has since been renovated and repurposed as the St. Agnes Senior Apartments. The proximity of this facility has led to the creation of gardens maintained by senior citizens on the side of the park opposite the open field area.
In recent years, efforts have been made to improve the park's facilities. In 2016 and 2017, upgrades were implemented following community engagement. These improvements included the addition of a full-court asphalt basketball court, a memorial bench, refreshed playground equipment, and a new splash pad designed to represent the Marquette Dragons.
