About Benson Park in Omaha
Benson Park is a 217-acre public park located in the Benson neighborhood of Omaha, Nebraska. Established in 1931 when the city of Omaha acquired land north of Military Avenue, the park has since become a popular recreational destination for local residents.
The park features a scenic lagoon that serves as a focal point for various activities. Visitors can enjoy fishing in the lagoon or simply appreciate the serene views it offers. A cement loop approximately 1/3 mile in length surrounds the lagoon, providing a pleasant path for afternoon walks.
Benson Park has undergone several renovations and improvements over the years. In 1999, the park saw significant upgrades, including the deepening of the lake and the addition of trails and sidewalks. More recently, new facilities have been added to enhance the visitor experience, such as a picnic pavilion adorned with decorative stone columns.
The park's terrain is diverse, encompassing both hilly areas and lowlands, which adds to its visual appeal and provides varied landscapes for different activities. Full-grown trees throughout the park offer shade and contribute to the natural beauty of the area.
For families, Benson Park offers multiple recreational options. An 8,500 square foot playground provides a space for children to play, while a sprayground offers a fun way to cool off during warmer months. The park also includes an all-access playground that transforms into a water park in the summer, catering to visitors of all abilities.
Benson Park is not just a daytime destination; it also features an ice rink located near Military Avenue, which is open from November through March, allowing for winter activities.
