About Gallagher Park in Omaha
Gallagher Park is an 18.8-acre urban park located in the Benson neighborhood of Omaha, Nebraska. Situated next to Benson High School, the park has a rich history dating back to the late 19th century when it was originally known as Krug Park, a popular amusement park.
The land that now comprises Gallagher Park was initially developed in the 1880s by Charles Tietz as "Tietz Park." It later became Krug Park, a full-fledged amusement park featuring thrilling rides, performances, and concessions. However, following a tragic roller coaster accident in 1930 and subsequent decline, the park closed in 1940.
In the 1950s, the area was transformed into a traditional-style park. It was renamed Gallagher Park after Rachel K. Gallagher, an Omaha philanthropist who led a decade-long campaign to convert the former amusement park into a city park.
Today, Gallagher Park serves as a green oasis in the midst of an increasingly urban landscape. It offers recreational facilities for the local community and visitors alike. The park is open year-round and is operated by the City of Omaha Parks and Recreation Department.
In recent years, the park has received additional support for improvements. The Gallagher Family Foundation donated $1.2 million to the Omaha Parks Foundation for renovations and enhancements to Gallagher Park.
