Metcalfe Park

Metcalfe Park is a small neighborhood park located in the Country Club area of Omaha, Nebraska. The park occupies approximately 4 acres of land. It is bounded by Decatur Street to the north, Happy Hollow Avenue to the south, 51st Street to the west, and Country Club Avenue to the east.

The park features a long sloping green area that is popular for various activities such as soccer, lacrosse, and playing catch. A notable landmark within the park is "the pencil tree," which often serves as a home base for games. The park's perimeter sidewalk, excluding the playground area, measures about 1/3 mile (approximately 0.5 km) for one complete lap.

In 2010, local residents, including neighborhood children, partnered with businesses and the Hollis and Helen Baright Foundation to raise funds for park improvements. This initiative led to the installation of new playground equipment, a rain garden, picnic tables, and benches, with the work completed in 2012. The playground is now known as the Hollis and Helen Baright Playground, named after long-time residents who lived across the street from the park.

Metcalfe Park has continued to see additions and improvements over the years. In 2014, a Little Free Library was added, which later served as a small food pantry during the economic downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. In 2018, a Dero FixIt bike repair stand and tire pump were installed, enhancing the park's amenities for cyclists.

The park was named in 1938 for Richard Lee Metcalfe, a former mayor of Omaha. Originally, the area was intended to be developed into residential lots, but it was ultimately preserved as a public green space for the community.
