About Elmwood Park in Omaha
Elmwood Park is a historic public park located in Omaha, Nebraska. Established in 1889, it spans 216.4 acres, making it one of the largest parks in the city. The park features a diverse landscape of wooded areas, open fields, and a small creek known as Spring Creek.
Originally designed by prominent landscape architect Horace Cleveland as part of Omaha's comprehensive park and boulevard system, Elmwood Park has been a cherished green space for over a century. The park was named for the impressive elm trees that once dominated its landscape.
Throughout its history, Elmwood Park has served various purposes. In the early 20th century, it housed a popular spring where citizens would collect water, and later it included an auto tourist camp. Today, the park continues to be a focal point for recreation and community gatherings in Omaha.
The park is adjacent to the University of Nebraska at Omaha campus, providing a natural retreat for students and faculty. It also connects to the larger Omaha parks system through walking and biking trails, offering extended outdoor experiences for visitors.
Elmwood Park hosts several events throughout the year, including the popular "Shakespeare on the Green" festival, which brings free outdoor theater performances to the community during the summer months.
