About Weequahic Park in Newark
Weequahic Park is a historic urban park located in the South Ward of Newark, New Jersey. Spanning 311.33 acres, it is the second-largest park in Essex County and a significant green space within the city. The park was designed by the renowned Olmsted Brothers firm, who were also responsible for designing Branch Brook Park in Newark.
The centerpiece of Weequahic Park is its 80-acre lake, which is the largest lake in Essex County. This lake serves as a focal point for many recreational activities and provides a scenic backdrop for visitors. The park's landscape features a combination of broad lawns, forested groves, and gently rolling terrain, creating a naturalistic environment within the urban setting.
Weequahic Park has a rich history dating back to the late 19th century. The land was originally part of the Waverly Fairgrounds, which included a horse trotting track. In 1895, the Essex County Park Commission proposed developing a park in this area, and by 1899, they had acquired 265 acres of land. The park officially opened in the early 20th century and has since been an integral part of Newark's recreational landscape.
One of the park's notable features is its golf course, which opened in 1914 and is one of the oldest operating public golf courses in the country. Initially a 9-hole course, it was expanded to 18 holes in 1969. The park also includes various sports facilities, playgrounds, and picnic areas, catering to a wide range of recreational needs for the community.
In 2003, Weequahic Park was added to the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing its significance in architecture, community planning, and landscape design. Today, the park continues to serve as a vital green space for Newark residents, offering a variety of activities and a peaceful retreat from the urban environment.
