A Park Above

A Park Above is a unique recreational space located in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. Opened in 2015, it is considered the first fully-inclusive and universally accessible park in the state. The park spans approximately 6 acres within the Cabezon community of Rio Rancho.

Designed to exceed standard ADA requirements, A Park Above aims to eliminate physical and social barriers, allowing people of all ages and abilities to enjoy the park's facilities. The park's development involved extensive community stakeholder involvement and research to ensure it meets the needs of individuals with a broad range of disabilities and abilities.

The park features a variety of play equipment and recreational areas, all designed with accessibility in mind. This includes wheelchair-accessible play structures, sensory-friendly areas, and equipment that can be enjoyed by children and adults of varying physical and cognitive abilities. The park also incorporates shade structures to provide relief from the New Mexico sun, making it comfortable for visitors throughout the day.

A Park Above not only serves as a recreational space but also as a community gathering place. It includes areas for picnics, an amphitheater for events, and spaces designed to encourage social interaction among visitors of all abilities.
