About Wilkeson Pointe in Buffalo
Wilkeson Pointe is a 14-acre waterfront park located along Buffalo's Outer Harbor, offering visitors scenic views of Lake Erie. Opened in 2013, the park was created on a former industrial site that once served as storage for the ice boom used on the Niagara River.
The park features naturalized landscapes with native plant species, creating meadows, grasslands, and pollinator fields. A paved multi-use trail winds through the park, connecting it to the larger network of pathways along Buffalo's waterfront. The trail provides opportunities for walking, jogging, and cycling while enjoying lake views.
One of the park's distinctive features is a collection of kinetic wind sculptures that move with the breeze coming off Lake Erie. These artistic installations add visual interest and complement the park's natural beauty. Additionally, the park incorporates elements of Buffalo's architectural history, with marble ruins and columns from demolished buildings artfully arranged throughout the landscape.
Wilkeson Pointe includes a small beach area, though swimming is not permitted due to water quality concerns. However, the beach provides a pleasant spot for relaxation and enjoying the waterfront atmosphere. A kayak launch allows visitors to explore the harbor by water.
The park serves as a popular destination for picnicking, fishing, and watching sunsets over the lake. During the summer months, a seasonal beer garden and food service area operate within the park, offering refreshments to visitors.
