About Ontario Beach Park in Rochester
Ontario Beach Park is a 39-acre public park located on the shore of Lake Ontario in the northernmost section of Rochester, New York, near the Irondequoit border. The park features one of the Great Lakes' best natural sand beaches and has been a popular destination for locals and visitors for over a century.
The park's history dates back to the early 1900s when it was known as the "Coney Island of the West," featuring numerous attractions, hotels, and amusements. Today, while much of its original infrastructure has been replaced, the park still retains some of its historic charm, including the 1905 Dentzel Menagerie Carousel, which continues to operate and delight visitors.
Ontario Beach Park offers a variety of recreational opportunities. The beach itself, when open, provides a space for swimming and sunbathing. However, it's important to note that the beach is frequently closed due to water quality issues stemming from pollution in the Genesee River, which empties into Lake Ontario adjacent to the park.
A long pier extends into Lake Ontario, offering visitors a chance to walk out over the water and enjoy panoramic views of the lake. Fishing is permitted from the pier for those with a valid fishing license. The park also includes several sports facilities, including beach volleyball courts and areas for other recreational activities.
Throughout the year, Ontario Beach Park hosts various events and activities. During the summer months, the park features a concert series at its performance pavilion, offering free music to visitors on Wednesday evenings. The park is also home to annual events such as the Harborfest and fireworks displays on holidays.
The park is open year-round from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., providing visitors with ample opportunity to enjoy its amenities and natural beauty in all seasons. Its location at the mouth of the Genesee River also makes it a prime spot for watching boats enter and exit the Port of Rochester.
