About Midtown Park in Charlotte
Midtown Park is a 1.5-acre urban green space located in the heart of Charlotte, North Carolina. Situated at the intersection of South Kings Drive and Pearl Park Way, this park serves as a vibrant gathering place for the local community and visitors alike.
Opened in 2012, Midtown Park was designed to be a multifunctional space that seamlessly blends natural elements with urban aesthetics. The park features a rectangular lawn surrounded by stonework and shade trees, providing a serene environment amidst the bustling city.
One of the park's notable features is the "Braille Music Box," a seven-foot diameter spherical metallic sculpture created by artists Po Shu Wang and Louise Bertelsen. This unique artwork is designed to be accessible to the visually impaired, with a mechanism that translates Braille letters into musical notes, allowing visitors to interact with the piece and create their own melodies.
The Little Sugar Creek Greenway runs along the western edge of the park, connected by a formal stairway. This integration with the larger greenway system enhances the park's accessibility and its role as a connective space within the city's green infrastructure.
Midtown Park is not just a place for relaxation; it also serves as a venue for various community events. The open layout makes it suitable for small gatherings, performances, and even weddings. The park's design emphasizes flexibility, allowing it to adapt to different uses throughout the year.
As a public space, Midtown Park is open daily and is free to access. Its central location makes it easily reachable by both public transportation and private vehicles, with nearby parking options available.
