About ARTivity On The Green in Winston Salem
Artivity on the Green is an art-themed park located in downtown Winston-Salem, North Carolina, between 6th and 7th Streets on Liberty Street. Opened in May 2015, this half-acre park was conceived as a project by Art For Art's Sake (AFAS) to revitalize a once-forgotten area of downtown and connect the city's Arts District to Wake Forest University's Innovation Quarter.
The park features several distinctive elements designed to inspire visitors both visually and physically. At its center stands the "Tower Cloud," consisting of 13 red steel towers ranging from 35 to 50 feet in height. These towers are positioned to mimic the silhouette of the historic R.J. Reynolds Building (now the Kimpton Cardinal Hotel) and pay homage to Winston-Salem's industrial past. During warm months, the towers emit water vapor every half hour, creating a misty atmosphere.
Artivity on the Green is characterized by its unique design elements. Six pathways, marked by red ground lines, weave through the park and extend onto surrounding city sidewalks and building sides. These lines converge at the central Tower Cloud. The park also features a bandstand consisting of seven undulating steel ribbons representing the notes of a musical octave. This structure serves as a performance venue and includes integrated seating areas and artist easels.
The park's landscape includes rolling grassy hills inspired by the nearby foothills, offering comfortable spaces for sitting and playing. A 124-foot-long mural wall provides a canvas for local artists to display their talents, with the artwork changing annually during a festival called "Concrete Canvas".
Artivity on the Green serves as a community hub, hosting various events throughout the year, including concerts and art festivals. The park is illuminated at night, with the lights on the towers and bandstand changing colors, adding to its visual appeal after dark.
