Dorrian Green

Dorrian Green is a 6.32-acre urban park located in downtown Columbus, Ohio. Situated adjacent to the Center of Science and Industry (COSI), this green space serves as a central gathering area for both local residents and visitors to the city.

The park, which opened in 2017, was built over a 630-car underground parking structure, transforming what was once a surface parking lot into a vibrant public space. Named after Hugh J. Dorrian, a long-serving city treasurer and auditor, the park reflects Columbus's commitment to urban green spaces and community development.

Dorrian Green features a variety of gardens that showcase plants native to central Ohio. These include a sensory garden, reading garden, butterfly and pollinator garden, and a prairie garden. The park's design incorporates educational elements, aligning with its proximity to COSI and supporting the center's mission of science education.

A central feature of the park is the Fountain Plaza, which includes an interactive fountain surrounded by open-air pavilions and groves of flowering cherry trees. The northwest and southwest entrances to the park are marked by salvaged limestone structures from the historic Central High School Stadium that once occupied the site, connecting the space to its local history.

The park also includes play areas for both children and adults, encouraging physical activity and community interaction. A notable artistic element is the relocated kinetic sculpture titled "The Spectrum Tree," which celebrates Isaac Newton's discovery of the light spectrum.

Dorrian Green serves multiple purposes within the urban landscape of Columbus. It acts as a neighborhood park for the developing East Franklinton area, provides green space for visitors to nearby cultural institutions, and offers a venue for community events and gatherings.
