McFerson Commons

McFerson Commons, also known as Arch Park, is a 2.958-acre urban green space located in the Arena District of downtown Columbus, Ohio. The park was developed by Nationwide Insurance after the demolition of the Ohio State Penitentiary, which occupied the site from 1834 to 1998. It was named in honor of Dimon R. McFerson, the former chairman and CEO of Nationwide Insurance who served from 1992 to 2000.

The focal point of McFerson Commons is a historic arch salvaged from the old Columbus Union Train Station. This Beaux-Arts style arch, designed by Daniel H. Burnham of Chicago in 1893, was part of the third and final Columbus Union Station. The station was demolished in 1979 to make way for the Greater Columbus Convention Center, but the arch was preserved and relocated to its current position in the park.

McFerson Commons serves as a key link between the downtown Columbus riverfront and the heart of the Arena District. The park features an expansive open lawn area, which is frequently used for various recreational activities and events. It is a popular venue for annual festivals, 5K races, casual sports leagues such as kickball, and other community gatherings.

The park's location offers views of Nationwide Arena to the north and North Bank Park to the south. Its central position in the Arena District makes it a convenient spot for both residents and visitors to enjoy outdoor activities in the midst of the urban environment.
